Second Trip to Davao- Samal Islands

Map of Davao del Norte showing the location of...

As what I have mentioned a few posts ago, me and a friend went to Samal Island together with another family during my second trip to Davao. Samal Island is a very beautiful place. We went there via barge (a ship where you could take your car with you). The family we went with hired a van and we took it to Samal. The barge trip was about 15- 30 minutes away. It was just a short trip as Samal is still part of Davao.

Monfort Bat Colony

The first place we went to in Samal is the Monfort Bat colony. There, you could find thousands of bats in caves. You would not be able to get inside the caves but from outside, you would be able to see thousands of bats covering the walls of the caves. Their number is no reason for worry though as they are Fruit bats and pose no harm to humans whatsoever. According to the posters posted around the entrance of the colony, these bats feed on fruits and in turn distributes pollen from other fruit trees thus causing trees to flower and bear fruit. So, these bats are the reason that Davao is The Fruit basket of the Philippines and the reason why there are many Durian in Davao.

Hamigit Falls

Our next destination was Hagimit falls. Although Hagimit falls consisted of just small falls, the water is very cool and refreshing.  The water seemed very fresh and enticing but me and my friend did not go swimming as we did not want to get wet at that time. We had lunch there and some of the kids who were with us enjoyed swimming in the water. We didn’t stay there very long as we still had somewhere else to go to.

Our last stop was a private resort in Samal. It was owned by a friend of the family we went with and there we met other friends who also went there to relax. The place was a resort with many small cottages surrounding a big mansion complete with an entertainment room and a game room. The view from the veranda of the mansion is very beautiful and relaxing.  The resort has a big swimming pool that is about 8 ft at the deepest part and 2 ft at the shallow part for the children.  We sang songs inside their entertainment room as they have their own videoke  microphone and afterwards went swimming at the pool. It was lots of fun swimming in the pool even though it was raining. We finished at around 6 pm then we had dinner where we enjoyed lots of fruits such as lanzones and rambutan then went back to Davao proper the same way we came.

Samal is such a beautiful place and I really hope I get to go back there again to enjoy the other parts of the island. One day is not enough.

First Trip To Iloilo – Boracay, Butterscotch, Biscocho

Robinsons Place Iloilo entrance

I have been to Iloilo twice already, well,  three times if you count the first time I went to Boracay. But during that time we did not go to Iloilo proper so I’m not going to count that as a full-pledged visit :-)

Pasalubong (Butterscotch, Biscocho and Piyaya)

Anyway, the first time I went to IloIlo, I took the plane and I only stayed there for a couple of days. Not very exciting so not much to tell except that during that time, we went to Robinsons where a Pasalubong Center is located and bought lots of pasalubong (presents) there. We bought Biscocho, Butterscotch and Piyaya all branded Bong Bong’s and lots of other candies and pastilles that can be found there. Actually, as far as pasalubong is concerned, the first three food I have mentioned is native to Iloilo. Iloilo is famous for butterscoth the most. Whenever I think of Iloilo, my mouth starts to water for their butterscotch. Yes, that is how much I like butterscotch.

La Paz Batchoy

After buying pasalubong, we went to the original La Paz Batchoy restaurant. La Paz Batchoy is one of the foods which Ilo Ilo is famous for. La Paz Batchoy is a noodle soup that has chicharon and egg as toppings. You should try it when you go to Iloilo.

After shopping for  pasalubong and eating La Paz Batchoy, our group went to look for a Karaoke Bar. Sad to say, we walked a long distance and yet we did not find any Karaoke Bar with a private singing room. I do not think, Karaoke bars are common in IloIlo. However, we found a Karaoke bar where, if you would sing a song in the Karaoke, all customers will get to hear you sing. And sing we did.

We finished  at the Karaoke bar a little bit late and then went back to our accommodation because the next day was our flight back to Cebu.

Next time, I will talk about my second trip to IloIlo. It is a more exciting experience!

Indoor Activities in Cebu City

SM City Cebu

Last time, I wrote about outdoor activities here in Cebu City.  If you are a type of person who wants to enjoy and relax indoors, Cebu City has a lot to offer for you as well.

If you enjoy shopping, looking around for things to buy, playing games, watching movies, and eating, Cebu has two major malls that you can go to, Ayala Center and SM City Cebu, and a lot of smaller malls to choose from, like Robinsons, Gaisano, Parkmall, etc. These malls usually offer a variety of shops you can go to from clothes shops to shoe and bags, to jewelry shops.

Major shopping malls like SM and Ayala also has Game zones and movie houses where you can watch the latest movies in either 2D, 3d, or IMAX (SM only).

For food lovers, these malls also offer a wide range of food choices in different cuisines, from Filipino, to Korean, to Japanese, to Thai, to Malaysian and etc. So for those who have an exquisite palette, no need to worry, there is a food choice for you.

For those people who love to sing, Cebu City also has a lot to offer for you. You can find lots of singing rooms, or noraebangs as Koreans call it. I believe us Filipinos like to call it videoke bars. These videoke bars offers a wide range of songs to choose from, from old classics, to pop, rock, love songs, etc. They even have Korean, Japanese and also Visayan songs.

But what about the nature lovers? We will discuss that on the next post. until then…
